Thank you for visiting the calendar page of Southeastern Michigan Animal Rights Team. On it you will find both our personal events, global days of action, and other noteworthy dates.

We are now displaying our events in list form so that we may enter them well in advance without having several months of calendar blocks shown on this page. Please email S.M.A.R.T. for information on any of the events listed below. Please note that anything that looks like 'this' is a link. Simply click it to open a new page of related information.

Please check back often for upcoming events.  Event listings will be updated as events arise.

Send any event submissions to contact@GoSmart.org.  Please send only submissions for events in Michigan or for those in which global participation occurs.  Submissions are, for obvious reasons, subject to approval.

- Demonstrations against the use of animals as entertainment: Shrine circus March 30 - April 3, Hazel Park Raceway.

Many attendees try to justify the purchase of their ticket as a way to 'help children.' However, proceeds from the sale of circus tickets do not go toward a charity or help children in any way. If you already hold a ticket, please view the information that is legally required to be printed on the back. Not a charity, not tax-deductible, and proceeds go to the Shriners' administrative fund.

Please educate yourself on the vast differences between 'Shriners Hospitals for Children,' 'The International Temple of Shrine,' and your local 'Shriners Temple or Club.' The three are responsible for very different things. Don't confuse one for the other... Nowhere on the Shriners Hospitals for Children web site does it list a circus as any of the ways to help, donate, or volunteer.

If you are truly interested in helping children, please go directly to the source. Visit this site, containing the 25 top rated non-profit organizations for children, one of which is located right here in Michigan. (Incidentally, there are no Shriners Hospitals for Children located in the State of Michigan.)

January

12th: Animal WRITES Meeting. Writing officials, companies and/or sponsors regarding a specific event or incident. Coffee Beanery, Berkley
22nd: SMART annual post-holiday dinner. Red Star Restaurant, Dearborn
29th: Demonstration against PBR (Professional Bull Riding), The Palace, Auburn Hills




February

12th: Have a Heart, don't wear FUR. This annual event takes place the Saturday before Valentine's Day in Downtown Birmingham.
16th: SKIN TRADE Film Screening @ Caroline Kennedy Library in Dearborn Heights. Doors @ 6:45, film @ 7. Vegan refreshments served.




March

2nd: Anti circus leafleting, Hazel Park
3rd: Protest against the ridiculous "donkey basketball" game, Redford Union High School, Redford
12th: SASHA Farm 10th Anniversary Banquet & Silent Auction, Weber's Inn, Ann Arbor
13th or 14th (TBD): 1st day of action against the Canadian Seal Slaughter, Tunnel to Windsor, Downtown Detroit
27th: Tabling at VegFest in Novi
30th: Protests begin against the use of animals as entertainment @ Shrine Circus, Hazel Park Raceway. Aside from capturing and keeping wild animals, training is barbaric and these creatures are forced to travel for up to 48 weeks out of the year, performing tricks in front of screaming crowds
You choose, they can't. The circus is no place for animals.

10th: Demonstration against the annual slaughter of Canadian seals, Red Lobster, Madison Heights
16th: Elephant Challenges Conference, hosted by ZooCheck Canada - Toronto, Canada
16th: WLALW (World Laboratory Animal Liberation Week) begins today. More than 20,000,000 million animals suffer and die in U.S. laboratories every year. These innocent victims are subjected to addictive drugs, caustic chemicals, ionizing radiation, chemical and biological weapons, electric shock, deprivation of food and/or water, psychological torture and many other horrors.
22nd: Leafleting outside 'Water for Elephants' screening, against the use of animals in circuses, Sterling Heights
24th: Leafleting continues at 'Water for Elephants.' Location TBD

1st: World Vegetarian Day - October 1 is the annual kick-off of Vegetarian Awareness Month. Make a difference this October by informing others about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Vegan diets have proven health benefits, not to mention saving animals’ lives and helping to protect and preserve our planet.
2nd: World Farm Animals Day




November

25th: Fur-Free Friday. Join us for this annual & internationally celebrated event. Somerset Mall, Troy
